Birch Fabrics Mod Basics Applique Onesie Tutorial

Mod Basics Onesies Tutorial + Downloadable Animal PDF

A few people have asked us how we made the super cute Mod Basics Onesies we posted about earlier this week....so....we thought it would be fun to do a quick tutorial!

Step 1: First you draw your animals on the slick paper side of the HeatnBond or your favorite iron on adhesive (remember to draw your animals facing the opposite direction of the way you want them to appear on the onesie).

Here is downloadable PDF of the animal print outs we used on our onesies (LINK)

Step 2: Next you iron your fabric scrap pieces to the rough side of the HeatnBond.

Step 3: Then cut your animals out along your drawn lines.

Step 4: Take the paper off the back of the fabric and iron it on to the onesie with the sticky side down.

Step 5: Not shown here, but we recommend, sewing a zig zag stitch all the way around the applique so that when washed it doesn't come off the onesie. Since ours were for a trade show we skipped this step:)

Step 6: Put onesie the closest baby and smile!

We used organic onesies from American Apparel, which interestingly enough the colors they offered matched perfectly to our Mod Basics!

We bought the onesies in the following colors; cinder, pomegranate, galaxy and natural.

Mod Basics will be available January 2012.

Enjoy

Why 100% Organic Cotton?

Why Birch Fabrics uses Certified 100% Organic Cotton...

As we pack everything up to head out of town to Quilt Market in Houston we thought we would share with you our passion for organic fabric and green living.

Birch Fabrics are committed to providing an environmentally friendly alternative to the quilting and crafting community.  We believe that the sustainability of our planet begins with raised awareness, information and above all else action

At Birch Fabrics we use certified 100% organic cotton.  So what is certified organic cotton and why is it important?  The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.  Our mill is certified by the GOTS.

And why do we use it?  There are other certifications of organic cotton but we choose to use GOTS certified fabric because it is the most comprehensive and highest standard for fabric creation from seed to printed cotton.  You can check out this nifty video to learn more about GOTS...its really quite interesting.

  • Cotton is a crop that attracts a wide range of insects (eg cutworm, cotton bollworm, tobacco bollworm, army worm, loopers, aphids, whitefly, spider mite among others). This is one of the reasons why it is one of the largest pesticide dependent crops in the world.
  • Conventional grow cotton accounts for more than 25% of worldwide insecticide use and 10% of the pesticides.  Pesticides used on cotton are among the most hazardous.
  • Pesticides used on cotton-- even when used according to instructions-- harm people, wildlife and the environment. These pesticides can poison farm workers, drift into neighboring communities, contaminate ground and surface water and kill beneficial insects and soil micro-organisms.

We could go on and on about the challenges we face as a global community if we don't continue to explore, accept and use alternatives for conventionally grown cotton.  We hope in some small way Birch Fabrics can add some "green" to the world one yard at a time.

Please stop by and see our luscious organic cotton fabric at the Quilt Market, booth # 1548-1550

Birch Fabric's Avalon Quilt

Avalon Quilt on the Cover of International Quilt Festival Quilt Scene

We are delighted that the Avalon quilt we showcased at the Spring Quilt Market is on the cover of this year's International Quilt Festival Quilt Scene magazine.  We asked Pokey Bolton, the editor of Quilt Scene, for a comment - "I love this quilt by Elizabeth Hartman, and how she came up with such a geometric yet whimsical design that really showcases these fun fabrics." - Pokey Bolton.

We really enjoy working with Elizabeth Hartman, the quilter who made the Avalon quilt, and thought it would fun to interview her for this blog post.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, and Oh Fransson!
I guess you would say that I'm a full time quilter, which I think sounds like kind of an odd job description. More specifically, I'm an author, pattern designer, and teacher. I live in Portland, Oregon. Since 2007, I've written a blog (ohfransson.com) about my sewing and quilting projects and my first book, The Practical Guide to Patchwork was published by Stash Books last Fall. I love making quilts and am here to tell anyone who will listen that it's a fabulous creative outlet that is both fun and achievable!

2. Why do you love to sew and quilt?
I have always loved making things, but I'm very practical. Sewing is perfect for me because it's a creative outlet that produces useful objects. Patchwork quilting is even better because, in addition to making a useful object, there are seemingly infinite design possibilities. I adore color and bold prints, and I like finding new ways to combine them. I also enjoy numerical and spatial problem solving, so the planning and pattern designing part of quilt making is very appealing to me.

3. The Birch Fabrics Avalon Quilt - what was your inspiration for the design?
The design was inspired by the Avalon Squares print.  I love the look of the blocks and strips floating around in space. That motif reminds me of a mid-century idea of something futuristic, which I love. In the quilt the block-like shapes provide an opportunity to show off the larger-scale Avalon prints.

4. Modern Quilting vs. Traditional Quilting - what is your perspective?
Ask 100 quilters this question and you'll get 100 different answers! I self-identify as a modern quilter and, for me, modern quilting is about form, function, and freedom.

Forms in modern quilting are often bold and graphic, with an emphasis on architectural designs, negative space, and flat areas of color. Modern quilters tend to keep up with trends in color and pattern and are often influenced by mid-century modern aesthetics.

Function means that I make quilts for people to use today, not put away in their closets. I spend a lot of time on my quilts, but they're made to be used. If they get dropped in the mud, covered in cat hair, or have coffee spilled on them, I consider that just a natural part of their useful life.

Freedom refers to the fact that I don't think there's one right way to make a quilt. Good construction fundamentals are important, but I think quilters should be free to explore techniques and designs that work for them.

I'm also an officer of The Modern Quilt Guild and would encourage anyone wanting to learn more about modern quilting to visit our website, themodernquiltguild.com.

Thank you Elizabeth!  Thank you Pokey, and the entire staff at Quilt Scene.
