Birch + Rag Quilts

Eye Candy Rag Quilts

I'm drawn to the juxtaposition of rag quilts made with modern prints.  Rag quilts seem timeless and when mixed with contemporary designs have such panache...I love them!

These quilts remind me of when my boys were younger and their little fingers would play with the tags and soft edges of blankets.  A rag quilt's construction creates an inviting tactile quality that seems so wonderful for little ones to play with and enjoy.

Here are some gorgeous Rag Quilts that we found, and wanted to share.

Birch Fabric's Inspiration

My Inspiration

I want to share with you a new magazine, Stitch Craft Create, that I find to be wonderfully inspiring.  People often ask me what inspires me and as an artist (because I'll always be an artist first and a business woman second) being inspired is a constant state of mind for me.  It might be something I see in my child's drawing, a new designer collection or, often for me, nature and its unwavering beauty...Oooo or one of those fabulous Japanese designers I so covet.

Today though I found Stitch Craft Create inspiring.  The magazine is full of super projects  in a welcoming order of craft, sewing and mixed medium projects.

I was of course drawn to the fabric projects...big surprise for all of you I am sure.  Look at this Advent Calendar...how sweet.  I love the vibrancy of the green felt but wouldn't this be gorgeous in fabric too?
Their photography is super and the layout is inviting.  This is the spread leading into the fabric project section...are you inspired?  I was.

And this is my favorite project...LOOK at these Christmas trees.   If someone will make these for me I'll send you the fabric...I think I must have them.
This premier issue is holiday themed, which makes it especially luscious and vibrant...a wonderful treat as we head into the long Thanksgiving weekend.

Here is a LINK to their website too...they have some great tutorials on their site

I say "Welcome" Stich Craft Create and thank you for such an inspiring first issue...I can't wait for the next one.

xx

Birch Fabrics Flickr Family

Birch Fabrics Thanks Their Flickr Family

As we all approach Thanksgiving I think consciously and subconsciously we all start to think about our life and the people in our life for which we are THANKFUL, I know I am.  At Birch we started to think about all the wonderful people we are fortunate to connect with throughout the year with our fabrics.  We added the  Birch Fabrics Flickr group a while ago because we found it heartwarming to see the absolutely amazing creations that people craft with our fabric...and we wanted to share this with others.

We thought it would fun to showcase and celebrate our wonderful sewists and crafters so we have developed some Pinterest boards to share these super projects with everyone.

Birch Fabrics Circa 50 Pinterest (link)
Birch Fabrics Storyboek (link)
(Sadly, we have more boards but Pinterest is having some technical difficulties...we will share more as soon as possible.)

You really can't see the detail of these wonderful projects in this image so I encourage you to click on the link above to see everyone's creativity.

In honor of being THANKFUL and expressing our appreciation to all that support our dream of building a contemporary organic fabric company, we are going to award a prize once a month to a project on our Flickr site.

This month we would like to acknowledge chel1974 and her amazing  quilt using our Marine by Dan Stiles collection.  The concept is fabulous, and the sewing details (a fin!) are amazing!  Thank you for sharing your creativity chel1974.  We will be sending you some fabric from our newest collection, Circa 52.  We can't wait to see what you create next.

Post your projects on our Flickr site and you could be next months winner.

Thank you again to all.

Interview with Melissa Lunden

Birch Fabrics + Melissa Lunden
We wanted to shine a spotlight today on the lovely Melissa Lunden.  We have been working with Melissa for a while now, and she recently completed another beautiful quilt for us for Quilt Market, using our Circa 52 fabrics.

1. Tell us about yourself in 50 words or less
I am an avid sewer living in Central California with a very handsome husband, adorable two-year old, and five sewing machines. If I am not thinking about sewing, I am probably thinking about cooking, baking, what book to read next, or which park to go to after Lila wakes up from her nap.

2. Who introduced you to sewing and when?
My mother is the one who started all of this. She is an amazing sewer who patiently let me use her machine as a child. Luckily it was a Singer from the 1960's so it could take a beating.

3. Why do you have such a passion for sewing now?
My passion for sewing is so multifaceted. I love working with beautiful fabric; I love the challenge and sense of accomplishment after finishing a project; I love the connection I have with other sewers; and I find a deep joy in giving handmade gifts.

4. And, what is your favorite sewing project...and why?
I made my first quilt four years ago and my love for quilting just keeps growing. I was inspired by all of my friends having babies.  Nothing makes me happier than seeing a sweet little baby lying on one of my quilts.

4a. Tell us about these fabulous bags that you make
Thank you! The bags were what started it all. I took a bag making class years ago in San Francisco at Stitch, a sewing studio, and it was magic. I loved pairing fabrics together to make something that every lady needs. The next thing I knew, people wanted to buy the bags from me, and who was I to say no? Selling the bags meant that I could buy more beautiful fabrics so I could make more bags.

5. Please tell us about your inspiration for the Circa 52 Pebble quilt.
The inspiration for the quilt came from the design of the Pebble print in the Circa 52 line, which was Cynthia Mann's idea. I wish I could take credit for it, but the genius is all Cynthia. It is such a fun way to show off the prints and to play around with different sewing techniques.

6. Please tell us about the construction of the Circa 52 Pebble quilt
This quilt was the first time I created something that was predominately applique, rather than piecing. It was a fun challenge. I used five different pebble templates to use with the prints. The pebbles are appliqued onto the Kona Ash with fusible web and then the edges of the pebbles are secured with a tight zigzag stitch.

And, the fun questions -

Favorite color? Aqua. It is such a great pop of color and pairs so well with everything.

If you could be someone other than yourself who would it be? It would be me, just with a much fancier long arm quilting machine.

What actress would play you in a movie about your life? Drew Barrymore.

Favorite food? A crusty baguette and some good cheese.

Favorite Movie? Most recently it is Man on Wire.

Something everyone should know about you but probably doesn't

I am an attorney that is licensed to practice in California and New York.

Thank you so much Melissa!

Birch Fabrics Interview

Cynthia Mann of Birch Fabrics

We (as in the Birch Fabrics family!) thought it would be fun to interview our fearless leader, Cynthia.  We wanted to share more about our company but in a fun and interesting way that let's you get to know us a little bit better.

Tell us about yourself in 50 words or less?

I would say I’m an artist at heart and a business woman by accident.  I’m often too nice, non confrontational, care deeply for others and don’t like it when anyone’s feelings are hurt.  I’m not tidy, neat or organized, but pride myself on having a very good memory.

When and why did you start Birch Fabrics?

We started Birch Fabrics in 2009 in an effort to fill a void in the quilting community for organic fabrics. We were already selling fabrics retail on our website, www.fabricworm.com and we were having a very hard time sourcing organic fabrics. We just decided to do it ourselves.

When you opened Birch Fabrics what was your main goal?  Has that goal changed?

When we opened Birch Fabrics the store, our goal was to provide our local community with an opportunity to have access to our beautiful fabrics, especially our organic fabrics. There were no stores within 100 miles that carried printed organic fabrics.

When referring to starting our line of fabrics, our main goal was simple. Get organic cotton in front of young moms and crafters that are interested in living a greener lifestyle. We knew if it was important to us, that it must be important to many more like us. Our goal is still the same. We wish to stay small, independent and a family business, but we want to draw awareness to why organic cotton in important to our families, our environment and our World. I also had a personal goal of getting more modern boy prints in the market place, since I had a seen a real lack there of, while sewing for two baby boys!

Why did you choose to use organic cotton vs. standard cotton?

We feel that not only is the organic cotton better for the environment, but the cotton and the construction of our fabric is superior to that of standard quilt weight cotton. We feel that if you are going to spend $10-20 per yard on fabric to make a beautiful quilt, the quilt should be an heirloom and should last for generations to come.

You design some of the Birch fabric collections?  Please tell us about your creative process.

Our creative process almost always starts with a theme. We create a design board with fabric swatches and photographs. We draw some sketches in pencil, and work on an over all concept. We consider current trends in pattern and color and then start manipulating our drawings in Photoshop and Illustrator. The second phase of the process is thinking about how each print will be used by the customer and tweaking repeats of designs to work for the end user, or eliminating designs based on whether or not we think the end user will be able to work with the design.
Why do you use other designers for the Birch line?

We have thus far only worked with Dan Stiles and Monaluna Designs, and we really mesh with their aesthetic. We are confident that our customers like to have options and we hope to bring on more designers in the future.

Do you live a "green" lifestyle?  If yes, please tell us more about it.

We do our best to live a green lifestyle. Our kids have organic bedding, we cook with organic food, and we recycle and compost as much as possible. We understand that it can be difficult and expensive to change your entire lifestyle to live green, but every little bit counts. Jason built this cool tube from our pantry that deposits out to a recycling bin in our garage, and it fits cans and bottles perfectly, so I think the key is to making green living fun and easy for the whole family so that it doesn’t feel like a chore.

What is your greatest joy and your biggest challenge being a working Mum?

My greatest joy in being a working Mom, is showing my boys good work ethics and that anything is possible when you are passionate about what you believe in. They see me working hard, and sometimes too much, but in the end they get a real sense of what hard work is about, and how following your dreams can lead to real successes in life.

My biggest challenge is definitely balancing work with family. But we are working very hard to free up more time now that the business is grounded.

What is next for Birch?

This year will bring several new collections of course. We are currently drawing our follow up to Storyboek, which will include more marine life and our favorite Dutch muses to be released in the Summer! We hope to work with Dan Stiles and Monaluna again on new collections next Fall, and of course more basics, and maybe a follow up to Avalon as well.

And, the fun questions -

Favorite color? A moody mineral blue/green

If you could be someone other than yourself who would it be? I like being me :-)

What actress would play you in a movie about your life? I’d choose Julia Delpy but she’d have to fake an English accent!

Favorite food? My husband's Heirloom Tomato Salad

Favorite Movie? Before Sunrise

Something everyone should know about you but probably doesn't

I have a strong skin allergy to metals (wow, we didn't even know this!)

We hope you enjoyed learning a little more about Cynthia, and Birch Fabrics.
xoxo

Birch Fabrics Mod Basics Applique Onesie Tutorial

Mod Basics Onesies Tutorial + Downloadable Animal PDF

A few people have asked us how we made the super cute Mod Basics Onesies we posted about earlier this week....so....we thought it would be fun to do a quick tutorial!

Step 1: First you draw your animals on the slick paper side of the HeatnBond or your favorite iron on adhesive (remember to draw your animals facing the opposite direction of the way you want them to appear on the onesie).

Here is downloadable PDF of the animal print outs we used on our onesies (LINK)

Step 2: Next you iron your fabric scrap pieces to the rough side of the HeatnBond.

Step 3: Then cut your animals out along your drawn lines.

Step 4: Take the paper off the back of the fabric and iron it on to the onesie with the sticky side down.

Step 5: Not shown here, but we recommend, sewing a zig zag stitch all the way around the applique so that when washed it doesn't come off the onesie. Since ours were for a trade show we skipped this step:)

Step 6: Put onesie the closest baby and smile!

We used organic onesies from American Apparel, which interestingly enough the colors they offered matched perfectly to our Mod Basics!
American Apparel Organic Onesie in Natural

We bought the onesies in the following colors; cinder, pomegranate, galaxy and natural.

Mod Basics will be available January 2012.

Enjoy
