Free PDF Pattern & Tutorial: Upside Downside Apron {by The Crafty Kitty}

I am very pleased to welcome Stephanie, of The Crafty Kitty, back to the Birch Blog to share yet another fabulous tutorial with you all!  Stephanie is committed to sewing organic, which makes it such a perfect partnership in our book.  Well that and her mad skillz.  That's right... I spelt skillz with a "z".  She's that good.  Enjoy!

 A quick sew, this reversible apron fits ages 2-5 years. Double the apron, for double the mess and double the FUN! You will need:

• 2 metres (2 1/4 Yards) of coordinating organic cotton ribbon 7/8" width
• 2 x 2" pieces of recycled textile yarn
• 3/4 yard of canvas ( I used Upside Downside from Birch Fabric's Charley Harper Canvas Collection)
• 3/4 yard of second fabric (I used a plain, organic cotton/organic linen blend fabric)
• organic cotton sewing thread
• Apron pattern

Print out and assemble the pdf pattern. Cut apron (on the fold) from your 2 fabrics. Cut the ribbon into 2 x 1 metre pieces (1 yard pieces should work too). Bind 1 end of each piece by using a very narrow zig zag stitch.

Next, pin, then baste loops and ribbons (non bound end) 1/4" seam allowance.

  Now, place main apron and lining apron, right sides facing. sew all the way around using 1/2" seam allowance. Making sure you leave a 2-3" gap at the bottom of the apron for turning, trim seam allowance to 1/4" and trim corners.

  Turn apron, right sides facing out. Finally, press and top stitch 1/8" away from edge.

Options for customization:

• Use a contrast top stitch
• Add a simple rectangular pocket
• Try adding, contrast bias binding or piping around the edges

This apron is great for role play as well as messy activities.

It makes a great, last minute, gift. Give the apron, on its own, paired with cookie cutters or a homemade playdough bakery set.

The apron ties by crossing the ribbons at the back, threading through the loops at the waist then tying together in the centre (see central image in collage above).
