We're excited to welcome back Beth, of Plum and June. She's an amazing quilter and all around sewer. Beth created this supremely modern and eye-catching quilt with our upcoming Feather River line by Jay-Cyn Designs. We love the warm colors featured in the front, and the cooler colors on the back! We want to go get lost "In The Woods" with this quilt. Enjoy!
One of my favorite things about fabrics from Birch Organic is that they usually include at least one fabric that features all of the prints from the line. I always love working with that print (the one from feather river is called "feather river patch") - both for fun backings and for fussy cutting.
For this quilt, I used some fussy cuts from the patch print for the final border which I think adds to the "story" of the quilt.
As with most of my tutorials, I am going to provide you with the measurements that I used but this is another quilt that is easily modified to the fabrics you are using.
1. Start by choosing the fabric for your center square and cut a 9" square. When you are choosing the area of the fabric that you want to highlight, remember that you will lose the edges to the seams so cut accordingly.
2. Next, start cutting and attaching your borders. You'll attach the side borders first, press the seams and trim.
3. And then attach the top and bottom borders, press and trim.
*To make the final quilt a rectangle instead of a square, I used more width for some of the top and bottom borders.
4. Repeat the same two steps for each border using the measurements listed below. Note: you'll need four strips for each border (two for the sides plus one each for the top and bottom.)
Border 1
side borders: 1" x 9"
top and bottom borders: 1" x 10"
Border 2
side borders: 1 1/2" x 10
top and bottom borders: 2 1/2" x 12
Border 3
side borders: 3 1/2 x 14"
top and bottom borders: 4 1/2" x 18"
Border 4
side borders: 2" x 22"
top and bottom borders: 2 1/2" x 21"
Border 5
side borders: 3 1/2" x 26"
top and bottom borders: 4 1/2" x 27"
Border 6
side borders: 2" x 34"
top and bottom borders: 2 1/2" x 30"
Border 7
side borders: 1 1/2" x 38"
top and bottom borders: 2" x 32"
5. Trim to 32" x 41"

6. Choose 5 fussy cuts for the side border and trim each to 4".
7. Cut 4 rectangles measuring 1 1/2" x 4" of background fabric. Sew a piece of background fabric to the bottom of 4 of the fussy cuts. And then sew the sets together, adding the final fussy cut to the bottom of the column.
8. Cut 2 strips of background fabric measuring 1" x 22" and sew one to either side of the column you made in step 7.
9. Cut a piece of background fabric measuring 5" x 20" and sew it to the bottom of the column. Trim and sew the strip to the right side of the quilt.
10. Cut a piece of background fabric 5" x 41" and sew it to the left side of the quilt.
11. Cut a piece of background fabric 5" x 41" and sew it to the top of the quilt.
12. To make the bottom border, fussy cut a 5" x 10" rectangle from a print fabric. Sew a piece of background fabric measuring 5" x 8" to the left side of the print and a piece of background fabric measuring 5" x 25" to the right side. Press, trim, and sew the strip to the quilt.

Quilt and bind as desired.
With these measurements, your quilt will finish at 41" x 50".
Approximate yardage requirements:
3/4 yard background fabric (cream)
1/2 yard solid fabric (I used birch sun)
1/2 yard of 3 different prints
Fat Quarter of 2 different prints
Fat Quarter of patch print (for fussy cutting)
Fat Quarter of feather river print (for fussy cutting)
2 1/2 yards backing fabric -- You will have fabric leftover from the quilt top so you might have enough for a pieced back (especially if you mix in a few solids from your stash.)
1/2 yard for binding.
